Before Dastan's brother's wedding, mutton at the Iyık Janyl bazaar was 32 som a kilo, and by the week of the wedding it was 38. Everyone was buying. The butcher said, "Madam, I did not invent the wedding." Fair enough.

Wages did not go up, of course. My uniform money went into the wedding gift (a rug, 150 som, from my mother-in-law's aunt who sells them). We eat soup for a week.
