The bell

Today the great bell tolls for the names of 1937. We stood in the yard in the cold, the whole parish, while the names were read one by one. Aruuke asked, "Are those people sleeping?", and Denha, who was standing with the candle, said yes, and God knows their names even where the earth does not.
Dastan took her on his shoulders so she could see the bell. I took Salima. We came home without speaking and made tea.
