Flu season, week three

22 January 2013 · winter

The corridor is full. Not "busy": full. People on chairs, on benches, one on a folded coat. We have 24 beds in the emergency centre and the ward upstairs gave us six extra mattresses.

I counted today: 38 patients with the same story. High temperature, cough, "I took aspirin and it did not help, doctor". Then I counted how many of them had a flu jab. Two. The jab costs 60 som in the pharmacy. A bed costs the hospital more and the family a lot more. I know the prices of things do not come into this, but I do wish people would think about the little arm and the little needle in October.

I am going home to sleep for twelve hours. Please wash your hands, and do not go to work with a fever, I mean you.
