A wedding for 300: my notebook
17 May 2015 · Toi
Last week we cooked for my neighbour's daughter. 300 guests, two days, one tent in the yard, two kazans, and the bride came in the white dress that her mother wore, shortened by half a metre.
5 a.m., the second morning. Tea for the cooks. That tea is the best tea of the year.My notebook for such a wedding has three columns: what, how much, who. I can show you the page:
- Meat: 90 kg beef and mutton (mutton only for the older relatives' table from the highlands)
- Rice: 30 kg
- Carrots: 35 kg (yellow, cut in sticks, yes I count the cutters)
- Onions: 15 kg, flour: 25 kg, oil: 20 l
- Tea: 6 boxes, sugar: 20 kg
- Helpers: 14 women, 6 men, 3 boys who bring water, 2 girls who carry plates
What the notebook does not count: the way the mother of the bride stands in the doorway of the tent and looks at all the food and says nothing for one minute. Then she cries and goes back to work. I have seen that minute thirty times and I will see it again, God willing.

Gulmira apa, in Moscow we had a "wedding" for 40 people in a restaurant and nobody cried. I came home to Iyık Janyl for this. Your page makes me homesick for something I never had.
Erkin, come for the next one. You will carry water with the boys.
