I got 61 out of 100 in the first mock test. History 88, Iradi 74, maths 31. THIRTY ONE. Daniyar got 45 and says it is "a reasonable start". He says that about everything, even his haircut.
Saltanat eje stopped me in the corridor and said: "Maths is a language. You can learn any language." Then she said it was a lie but a useful one. I wrote it down.

Last year of school. We said it at the first lesson, everybody said "last year" and then everybody got scared. Our teacher gave us the plan: two mock tests before New Year, one before March, the real one in May.
I put a calendar on the wall above the bed with the real Synak day in red. Emil asked why I have a picture of a red box. I said: this is my future. He said: it is a box.

Zarina and I are selling apricots at the Kyzyl-Adyr bazaar, on the table of her aunt, from seven in the morning. We have a scale and a paper bag and a sign that I painted: "SWEET LIKE GRANDMOTHER'S TEA".
Seven som a kilo. The first day we sold 40 kilos and ate 5 ourselves. Zarina is excellent: she calls out to the people and they come. I count the change because she is bad at it. Together we are a firm.
Our table at the bazaar, Saturday, 6.40 in the morning.

Today was the last bell for the big ones. Nurbek is in 12th! He wore a ribbon and carried a first-year girl on his shoulder with the bell, like in films. Mama cried. Grandmother said in her time the last bell was a real bell from the tractor station.
Next year it is me. I am scared of the Uluttuk Synak already.
The school yard after the last bell.

Now everything is more expensive. A kilo of sugar was 9 som and is 11. Mama says it is the dollar, which changed on Monday, and the sugar does not know it is a dollar. But the shop does.
I asked my uncle if it will stop. He said: it will stop when it stops. This is how the adults help. Saltanat eje made a lesson of it in the school (she took our class for the economics teacher). She said: remember how this feels, this will be in the history books.
