A small New Year

31 December 2007, 20:15

No tree this year, only a branch in a jar that grandmother decorated with paper stars. It is actually beautiful. We had boorsok and tea and the radio, and the light was on from eight to ten, so we ate by the light, like in grandmother's story.

Zarina came to us with her mother and her brother. They brought dried apricots. Zarina's mother said the New Year is for hope, and then she looked at the branch and said it hopes very well.

We are back at school

13 October 2007, 16:30

School started a month late because of the summer. Some of my class are gone. I will not write who. But Zarina is still here and now she talks all the time, she is the funniest girl in the class.

Saltanat eje said we teach, so we learn. That's her saying now.

Quiet

3 March 2007, 14:00

I don't want to write much now. In February a lot of people came to our town from the side of Aulie-Ata, with bags and children. There are three new girls in our class. One of them, Zarina, sits with me. She does not talk yet. I gave her my good pen.

Mama says the important thing is that we are all at home. I agree with mama.

A strange Sunday

3 December 2006, 18:40

My uncle said the Americans left the base today. He said it very quietly, like it was at a funeral. Mama said: then what? He said: I don't know.

At school nobody knows what to think. There was the dollar and now there will be what? Saltanat eje told us "wait and learn". She also said that this is a lesson in how states change. I wrote it in my exercise book but I did not understand.

What is a contract?

30 September 2006, 16:50

In our new law lesson the teacher (young, from Talas, with a very serious tie) asked: "What is a contract?" Daniyar said: "When two people promise." The teacher said: "Close, but a promise can be broken for no reason. A contract is when two people promise and a third person can punish them if they break it."

I thought about it all the way home. At home grandmother said that in her time the third person was the old man of the street. I said: that is the same, grandmother! And she said: no, he had a longer beard.
