Plov for the forty days

07 May 2017 · Toi

Not all cooking is for happy days. In March my husband's uncle died, and today was the forty days. The family gathered, the imam and the priest of the street both came for the prayer (it is that kind of street), and we served plov to 120 people in the yard.

For a memorial the rule is the same as for a wedding but the voice is lower. The plov is the same, the meat is cut larger. Nobody dances. The oldest nephew puts the first plate on a cloth for the one who is gone. After the prayers, everybody eats in silence at first. Then somebody tells a story about the uncle and the table laughs. That is when you know it worked.

I will not post a photo.
