What a one-room flat costs in Talas
Rent, deposit, and the bills nobody mentions in the advertisement.

In the centre of Talas a one-room flat is now between $180 and $260 a month, depending on whether the stairs smell and whether the landlord lives on the next floor. Rents are quoted in dollars and paid in som at the official rate of 8.40, so a hundred-dollar rise in your landlord's mind is 840 som in your pocket. The deposit is usually one month, sometimes two.
What the advertisement does not say: the water (cold only, in many blocks, between June and September), the electricity (about 60-90 som in winter), the building fund (10-20 som), and, in the old blocks, the neighbour who knocks every Sunday at 7:30. For a young person on 2,000 som a month, the rent eats most of it. This is why so many share, and why so many go home to their parents in March saying "just for a while".
