A teacher's salary and a nurse's
About 2,200 and 1,800. The numbers say nothing until you put a month next to them.

A teacher in a Talas school earns about 2,200 som. A nurse at the regional hospital, 1,800. A bus driver, 2,600. A shop assistant at a supermarket, around 1,900. The state average is just above 3,000, pulled up by the banks and the oil companies.
I asked a teacher and a nurse to write me their month. The teacher: rent of the room 700, food 800, transport 25, phone 20, clothes 100, and the rest to her mother in Kara-Buura. The nurse: she lives with her parents, so rent is zero, and she spends 600 on food, 120 on the child's kindergarten, 300 on the husband's medicine, and the rest she keeps for the day the roof leaks.
Both said the same sentence: "I don't earn little, I earn exactly. The problem is that there is nothing left for the day that is not exact."

My daughter-in-law is a nurse. She read this to me aloud. She cried at the last line.
