From the departure lounge

We're in the lounge at the airport. The mountains are out, white and sharp, the way they were the first morning. A man in the line is selling hot tea in paper cups and the whole lounge smells of cardamom.

Today a new country is proclaimed, here in Talas. I haven't read all of it; the television is on in the corner and the volume is off. The people around us are quiet.

Thank you to everyone who read this, who wrote, who brought soup. We came to a place we didn't understand and we leave understanding a small part of it. I'll keep the blog up, for the photos.

Salam, and rahmat. Beth.

We were at the airport fence and waved, did you see? Lily waved back. Go with God.

Made it to Houston. You're a good writer, Beth. Keep writing.

Beth, I read the blog again today. We are alive in Talas. It was a hard time but we are alive, and the children are in school. Light a candle for us.

  4. Rahim ata (via his grandson) says:

My grandfather asks if Ohio is better than Texas. He says the apples are waiting.

Hello Beth. Mark's old office has a new engineer now but he is not so funny. Say hello to the children. Sam must be a big man.

Hello everyone! We're in Ohio now, near Jen. Mark works for a utility and I teach Sam's old friends' kids at the church school. Sam is 17 (!), Lily is 14. We still make plov on Sundays, and I still stir it by mistake. Thank you for keeping the blog alive. I read it when I'm homesick.

  7. Chynara says:

Beth! We read you. Lily must come to visit.

Still keeping the blog alive. Greetings from Talas in the snow. Come back when you can.
