A funeral in the lane

A short letter about Aibek-ata, who sold milk on the hill for forty years.

Dn. Denha · 12 Jun 2022 · Issue 132 min read
Aibek-ata died on Tuesday, at eighty-three. His family wanted the old way: the body in the house for the night, the neighbours with food, the procession to the old cemetery on the north slope, singing the whole way. Fr. Gewargis led and I carried the cross and walked backwards for a little, as the deacon does at the door.

At the grave a boy of about eight stepped forward and put a small bottle of milk on the earth. Nobody said anything. We all knew whose milk it was.

He gave my mother a free litre on every feast day. The bottle was from our guest house, the boy is his grandson, God keep him.

A letter most weeks, when the bell and the exams allow. Read it slowly, it was written quickly.
