Yuhanna of Merv, whom we keep on 20 November, was a monk who walked from Merv to our mountains in the days when the road was only a rumour. He was not a great preacher. He taught people to keep bees and to wash a wound with wine and honey. That is why the pharmacy on the bazaar street hangs his small icon over the counter.
I tell the seminary first-years: you will be asked to say wise things. Be useful first.
