Letters from the Bema

short letters from a deacon on Cathedral Hill · the liturgy, the seasons, the parish

Yalda eve

Five years of letters, and this is the first one I have written in snow.

Dn. Denha · 24 Dec 2025 · Issue 272 min read
Today I counted: this is the sixth Yalda I serve at the altar, counting the first, which I do not remember. The north door is lighter than in 2020 and the cups of kümöch are back on the tray. The old woman's chair stands empty by the pillar. Kenje-apa died in March. We sing her name on the day of the Nativity, and the choir, for one verse, leaves the flat half-tone in.

Happy Yalda to every reader. There are not many of you, but you come back, and that is rare.

A letter most weeks, when the bell and the exams allow. Read it slowly, it was written quickly.
